Five Ways to Overcome Stress in College

College can be a very stressful time. You are living away from home, often for the first time and often with someone you didn’t choose, in a community situation where you are constantly surrounded by other people. There is pressure to work hard, look good, make friends and, most of all to succeed. Many people find the pressures of college overwhelming. They end up dropping out, and often they live to regret this choice, sometimes for the rest of their lives. If you find yourself feeling stressed out, here are a few tips to keep your sanity and stay in school:

1. Exercise regularly. It’s a clich for a reason. Exercise is a proven way to combat stress. Just an energetic walk in the park or woods several times a week will help enormously. If you can find a treadmill or someone to run with, even better. The you exercise you get, the better you will feel. You will find your stress level is reduced, and you will sleep better.

2. Gather a study group. If you’re stressed about one of your courses, form a study group to zero in on that class. Get four or five of your fellow students together and go over the material weekly. You will be amazed at how much more salient the most puzzling problem becomes when you have other input. And don’t sell yourself short: You have things to offer them, things they didn’t understand from the lecture or the text that made perfect sense to you.

3. Eat balanced meals. If you eat in the dining hall, choose your foods carefully. Make sure you consume plenty of vegetables (e.g., leafy greens, carrots), protein, and complex carbohydrates (brown rice, bran muffins, oatmeal, corn meal). Pick up a nutrition paperback to learn about which foods are best for you. If you live off campus and have a kitchen, prepare quick, simple meals like rice and beans, sandwiches, pasta, stir fry, and salads with cheese and nuts. Once a week, cook something big that you can keep in the fridge and heat up-maybe a casserole or a soup. Try to limit how much sugar you eat. And don’t let yourself get too hungry. Hunger mimics stress, making you feel shakey and ungrounded. Eating well, on the other hand, will help you feel centered and ready for anything.

4. Get help. If you are having trouble with a particular course, if your course load feels like too much, or if you find yourself feeling worried and nervous much of the time, seek out the help of your advisor. That’s what he or she is there for. Don’t try and manage on your own if you aren’t feeling well. You (and maybe your parents) are paying good money to be in college, and you want to get as much out of it as you can. Being overwhelmed and stressed is not the optimal condition for learning. Your advisor may suggest you drop a course and add something else, or take less credits for the semester. If speaking with your advisor isn’t enough, consider talking to the college counselor or a therapist.

5. Go have some fun. Remember college is supposed to be a highpoint in your life. Make sure you get out with your friends. Go to the movies or see a concert. Have some friends over for chips and soda. Go on a date if there’s someone who appeals to you. A sure antidote to feeling stressed out about your schoolwork is to hang out with friends. And don’t be afraid to talk about stress. You’d be amazed how many other people are feeling the same thing.

College can be a lot to handle. But your stress level will abate if you are careful to take good care of yourself. Eat three meals a day, spend time with your friends, keep your workload at a reasonable level, and make sure you get enough sleep. If you still don’t feel well, get help. It may be just a matter of a meeting or two with your advisor or a therapist to get you feeling like yourself again.

Most people will have to attend at least one meeting which they know will be difficult, and even with the best intentions, once the meeting is in progress it can be hard to stay calm. But it really is imperative you do if you want your points to seem valid and want everyone to get the most out of meeting with each other. To help you in your next meeting, follow the tips below.

Getting yourself in a calm state prior to the meeting is one of the best actions you can take, as it provides you with a good foundation, going into the meeting without feeling harassed. This isn’t always practical and can be difficult to do if the meeting is later in the day, but things which could help are arriving with time to spare so you can collect your thought, having five minutes away from your desk first so you can get away from the days stresses, or a short burst of meditation.

Another valuable thing you can do before the meeting is make sure you are not hungry or thirsty. If you’re behaviour is anything like mine the more hungry you get the more likely you are to get cross, so ensure you’re nice and full so that hunger pangs or thirst don’t add to your troubles.

So that’s before sorted, but what about once you’re in there? My best tip would probably be to listen, which seems obvious, but cannot be stressed enough. If you listen carefully (and quietly) to what others are saying, even if you think they are wrong, it means you are fully focused on understanding their argument, gives you time to calm down if they have riled you and means you appear cool and collected.

Once they’ve finished you can then make your point or counter argument, but make sure this is done in a calm tone. Speak slowly and clearly as this will make you seem more assured, and so the others present will listen more carefully and it will reduce the likelihood of interruptions-another source of annoyance that could stop you staying calm.

Following these tips should help you go into a meeting calm, and remain that way, and if that fails just laugh inside to yourself at other people’s ridiculous ideas whilst maintaining a calm appearance- usually works for me!
