Mycelium Running by Paul Stamets

Paul Stamets’ Mycelium Running is a must have reference book for anyone working the land in any form, whether it be farming, forest management or environmental cleanup. But also for people who, like me, enjoy growing things, especially delectable edibles.

The book is filled to the brim with valuable information on how to improve soils for farming, gardening and forestry; create simple, low-cost biofilters for waste water (mycofiltration); and clean up toxic waste (mycoremediation).

A detailed description of Mycofiltration, the use of mushrooms to filter waste water, is given in one section of the book. It lists recommended mushroom species and materials to use in creating the mycofiltration bed, as well as dimensions, depth, layers, etc. Mycofiltration beds like this can be effectively used for both industrial waste water and farm runoff.

An added benefit of using mycofiltration beds on farms include the production of delicious food mushrooms, which sprout out of these beds. And every 2-3 years, the material in the bed can be dug out and used as a rich fertilizer on the fields of the farm.

Also useful for farmers is the information on no-till farming, which involves a method of leaving the stubble on the field until the next crops is planted. This encourages the development of saprophytic fungi, which break down old plant matter at a pace that’s highly beneficial for new plant life. In contrast, the conventional method of plowing down the stubble after harvest promotes anaerobic bacteria, which decompose organic substrate too rapidly. The saprophytic fungi also help prevent soil erosion and leaching of valuable nutrients and top soil.

Saprophytic fungi benefit forests too, by breaking down organic matter but also help by competing with parasitic fungi (blights), which may kill thousands of trees if not stopped. Foresters can easily seed saprophytic mushrooms in blight infested areas as a natural fungicide against parasitic fungi, fighting fire with fire.

The symbiotic mycorrhizal fungi can also be seeded in forests to promote healthy trees. Or they can be protected and naturally promoted through wise and informed forest management.

Mycorrhizal fungi help extend the reach of tree roots to better absorb nutrients and water, thus making the trees healthier and more drought resistant. Mycorrhizal fungi also manufacture and provide trees with natural antibiotics against many pathogens, especially parasitic fungi.

Mycoremediation is a term invented by the author of Mycelium Running, Paul Stamets, which is now in common use among mycologists. It refers to a method whereby toxic waste may neutralized through the use of mushrooms.

Petrochemicals and biological warfare agents can be effectively broken down by mushroom mycelium, as can dioxin and toxic industrial waste. Even toxic levels of chlorine, which is used as the universal biocide, can be neutralized by some species of mushrooms. Bacterial contaminants like Staphylococcus sp. and E. coli can be killed, and heavy metals can be absorbed by mushrooms to then be removed from a site.

At $50 per ton, mycoremediation is a very cost effective method to clean up toxic waste. Conventional incineration may cost upwards of $1,500 per ton.

The information listed above is still only the first half of this tome. The second half is filled with information on growing mushroom mycelium, which can then be used for the above-mentioned purposes, or for growing our own medicinal or edible mushrooms. And who doesn’t love gourmet mushrooms? In other words, this is not only a book for farmers, foresters, ecologists and mycologists. This is a valuable reference book for every home and household.

Often times, getting started with a goal is the hardest part of the journey. And once you start, positive momentum takes over and reaching your goal becomes easier and easier.

So here is an action plan you can implement immediately to jumpstart your diet:

1. Start writing things down: You won’t have to do this forever, but you do need an initial data set of what you are eating. Having this log will show, without any doubt, where your diet needs to be tweaked. Even better, studies have shown that nutrition logs increase weight loss success rates.

2. Stop skipping breakfast: Aside from the increases in energy that breakfast provides, it also makes sure that your fat burning hormones are produced at maximum capacity. Skip breakfast, and your ability to lose fat will be severely compromised.

3. Stop drinking calories: In other words, stay away from juices, lattes, coffee with sugar, smoothies and any other calorie-laden drink. If you really need that sweet flavor with your liquids, stick to water or artificially sweetened beverages. Keep in mind that liquid calories are the worst type of calories.

4. Have a regular meal schedule: This is one the best things you can do to make sure your diet doesn’t fail. You see, scheduling meals prevents “just in time” eating. And this type of eating usually revolves around junk food and whatever you can get your hands on as soon as possible.

5. Stop eating junk food: Specifically, stay away from fast food. You see, even if you aren’t having that many calories, fast food has ingredients in it that will severely compromise your metabolism. So make sure you stop eating this stuff.

Five Signs to Know Your Diet Plan Will Last

If you’re ever going to achieve your ideal weight, you’re going to have to develop a diet plan that you can do “forever.” Of course, people often get excited when they first start a new diet plan, but this excitement often wanes within a few weeks.

Look for these five things in a diet plan to make sure it’s going to work for you.

1. You Love It - It’s a sure bet (almost) that your healthy diet plan is going to last if you absolutely love it. If you’re excited about the food choices you get to make and you’re always satisfied with how much you get to eat, this is probably something you can stick with long-term.

Don’t go for “fad” diets that are impossible to follow for long, in that you have to force yourself to follow it and don’t enjoy doing so. You can’t consistently be depriving yourself and expect to stay on track. You either need to change your own tastes, so that you like the foods on the diet, or you need to find a plan that incorporates those with you already like (easiest way).

2. The Environment around You Supports What You’re Doing - Do you live in an “environment” that supports your diet? For example, if you decided to follow a raw foods diet, it’s much easier if others in the house are also eating a raw foods diet. It’s much more difficult (though not impossible) to remain focused on one particular way of eating (especially if you love it) if others in your household eat similarly.

However, if everyone I knew ate snacks and fried foods all day, everyday, it would be very difficult for me to stay on track. Not impossible, but difficult. The key here is to find friends, family members, or associates who support your diet so you can create an environment where your diet plan can flourish.

3. You Find Your Diet Rewarding - People are creatures who like to be rewarded, and you’ll need to see regular benefits from your diet if you want to be able to continue without much struggle.

Of course, one possible benefit from this is losing weight, but you’ll also have to be truly enjoying your diet at the same time. It’s going to have to make you feel better or give you more energy, for example, so that you remain motivated to stay on it. Other benefits may include that you don’t just lose the weight, but also maintain it easily once you’ve lost enough weight, as well as having more energy, better physical health, and so on. If you want to continue on your diet uninterrupted, you’ll need to see benefit from it, regularly.

4. Your Plan Includes Physical Activity - In some form, every single day, you should be getting some type of exercise. If you’re looking to lose weight, this is going to make that happen faster, but it will also make you feel better and will also help you stay “with the program,” so to speak. In turn, that’ll help keep you motivated so that you continue with your progress.

5. Your Diet Includes Personal Goals - Last, but never least, is setting goals. Your diet plan needs to be centered around your goals. Goals give you something to aim for, and they also serve to motivate you into action.

A goal of maintaining your weight in the range of 163-164 pounds (as an example), gives you reason to continue your diet plan. You know that if you venture off to far from your plan, you won’t make your daily goal. This constant reminder of having a goal will help to keep you on track.

What makes every diet plan enjoyable and doable is that it’s consistent, contains foods and activities (like exercise) that you enjoy, and it’s realistic and healthy. If the diet you currently follow isn’t something you know you can stay on for the long haul, you may want to change direction. Find a diet plan it’s going to work for you and keep you healthy. If you just want to get a start, write something down as a plan that details what can and can’t eat. You can improve upon your plan as you go.

5. Ice cubes.

If you sense a dull ache where the lesion is about to make its appearance, immediately reduce the swelling by applying an ice pack. If done in intervals throughout the day, this can drastically reduce the life span of your acne and reduce redness.
