Explanation of the Four Mental States Achieved Using Binaural Beats

February 8th, 2010

Using binaural beats will allow you to obtain varied states of mind with ease. These differing frequencies allow your brain to tune into different states. These states can assist you with a multitude of items, including assisting in positive thinking, focus, learning, relaxing, achieving a meditative state and many more.

Over a century ago, the effects of binaural beats were found. It was found that by playing different frequencies into your ears, it could have an effect on the frequency at which the brain operates at. As an example, if you wanted to tune your brain into a similar state that deeper sleep gives you, a frequency of around one to three hertz (hertz are changes per minute) could be played into your ears. And today, just a CD or MP3 player is required to get your brainwave frequency where you want it.

You may be questioning how someone’s mind can achieve these type of frequencies. This is done by playing two different sounds (one in each ear) at different (but similar) frequencies. For example, if a tone at 400 Hz is played in the right ear, and a tone of 410 Hz is played in the other ear, a “binaural beat” is created as the difference of the two frequencies. In this example, the difference of the two would be 10 Hz.

The frequencies can be classified into four categories, with each category focusing on a different state of mind. The names of these frequencies may be very familiar to you, as they are frequently used when speaking of other topics, but more especially when talking about binaural beats. These frequencies are called theta, delta, alpha, and beta.

Beginning in the 13 Hz to the 25 Hz range is the beta frequency range. Within this range, your brain can work on reducing and eliminating stress and anxiety, as well as remaining alert.

Next are the frequencies in the alpha range. These frequencies range from 8 Hz to 12 Hz. Positive thinking and the ability to improve your ability to learn can occur in this range. In addition, it also produces a state of slight relaxation.

The third category is the theta range. Frequencies in the theta range are from 4 to 7 Hz. This frequency range can result in increased focus, improved memory, deep relaxation, and is fantastic for meditation.

The last category is called the delta range. These frequencies are primarily responsible for deeper sleep, an increase in immune functions, and lucid dreaming.

It is clear to see that using binaural beats in the different ranges can trigger a huge array of mental states, resulting in a number of advantages for those who take advantage of them.

Are you ready to improve your life and are looking for the best rated binaural beat files to use on a CD, PC or MP3 player? Take a look at our brainwave mp3 resources!

How To Elude The Hazards Of Sleep Apnea

February 6th, 2010

There is a growing number of people in western society that are suffering from a condition that is difficult to detect, and if gone untreated, it has been known to cause a plethora of health problems that have disastrous consequences. While this condition does have certain symptoms, they are often associated with other, more common conditions, and therefore overlooked.

This condition is sleep apnea, and because of it’s stealth, there is no telling how many sufferers there are. Likely in the hundreds of thousands, if not the millions. Sleep apnea is when you stop breathing temporarily while sleeping. This obviously affects your quality of sleep, and can rob you of all the benefits of sleep.

The causes of sleep apnea can be difficult to pin down, but they fall into two basic categories. Those caused by physical conditions, and those caused by mental conditions. The physical conditions which cause sleep apnea are well understood. Being overweight, drinking too much alcohol, sinus problems, all can cause a temporary lack in breathing.

The other causes, mental or psychological, are not quite as well understood. Many sleep studies, and sleep research are performed, and as yet there is no clear indication of a psychological cause. Perhaps with advances in measuring technology, research physicians will someday be able to put their finger on it.

If you are concerned that you have sleep apnea, there are a couple ways to collect some data in order to present to your doctor. The best way would be to record yourself sleeping, and then play it for your doctor. This can be difficult for some, so asking a spouse or partner to describe what you sound like when you sleep is a good substitute. Others have found that keeping a sleep journal is a helpful method.

Whatever the cause of sleep apnea, once identified, it is fairly easy to treat. With the proper treatment following an accurate diagnosis, you can be sleeping like a baby in not time.

Depression and Anxiety.

by Dr. Arturo Ovies

Many mood related changes occur fairly commonly amongst everyone’ life.

Even mood related mania as well as depression affects us regularly at some time or other. In between these episodes though, most of those who suffer from mood swings are fairly free of any kind of symptoms, however about a third of those who suffer from mood swings will still exhibit some symptoms while a very small percentage will carry on having these mood swings despite therapy and treatment.

The main causes of mood swings are supposed to be a chemical imbalance in the brain and hormonal changes, which apparently affect women more than men, according to recent medical studies.

Effects of Chemical Imbalance

Almost all modern studies have shown that just as the body reacts to chemical imbalances and needs to be treated, the brain too can suffer from chemical imbalances.

Mood swings are one just effect of chemical imbalance in the brain. All the emotions and feelings that we experience - like joy or sorrow, fear or stress, anxiety or depression - are a direct result of the actions of certain chemicals called neurotransmitters, which are released in the brain.

The amount of neurotransmitters that are released, the extent and the rapidity with which they are absorbed, determines how the person feels. Among the well known neurotransmitters, chemicals, which can have an effect on the way people feel, are serotonin, GABA and norepenephrine amongst others.

Most medications and therapies aimed at helping mood swings try to re-establish the chemical balance as also help with the proper release and re-absorption of these chemicals.

Effects of Hormonal Changes

Women and teenagers go through many hormonal changes. Women usually go through hormonal changes at the time of their menstrual cycles, at the time of pregnancy, post-partum and at menopause. These hormonal changes trigger mood swings in most of them. Similarly, teenagers also go through plenty of mood swings at the time of puberty when there is an increase of sex hormones in the body.

In most cases, the mood swings go away once the hormone levels return back to normal.

Extreme forms of mood swings are normally associated with episodes of depression or mania.

Here are some of the common symptoms of depression and mania:

Symptoms of Depression

Continuously sad, feeling of emptiness and anxiety

No interest or joy in common activities

No interest or joy in sexual activities

Tremendous irritability and excessive restlessness

Excessive crying

Overpowering feelings of incompetence, worthlessness and helplessness

Too much hopelessness and pessimism

Extreme sleeping patterns - sleeping too much or sleeping too little

Not being able to sleep at all - insomnia

Obvious loss of appetite leading to noticeable weight loss

Else, overeating leading to noticeable weight gain

Decreased energy levels, constant feeling of tiredness and fatigue

At times, thinking even of suicide

Great difficulty in concentrating

Frequent forgetfulness or having trouble remembering

Continuing symptoms which do not seem to respond to treatment like digestive ailments and headaches

Symptoms of Mania

An extremely elevated mood

Irritability

Being able to manage with very little sleep

Talking too much

Having grand notions or grand ideas for the future

Increased physical and sexual activity

Displaying poor judgment

Displaying inappropriate social behaviour

Even if a person suffers from mood swings and in some cases, experience episodes of mania or depression, most of the time, these problems can be treated. Without treatment though, these mood disorders generally tend to only worsen leading to more frequent occurrences and more severe manic and depressive behaviours can result.

It is therefore imperative that as soon as mood swings start affecting someone they take proper treatment with the help of which they can resume their normal course of life.
