A common modality amongst meditation teachers in helping their students learn proper breathing technique is to place one hand on your stomach and the other hand on your chest. As we grow older, or in times of stress we tend to breathe higher in the chest as opposed to breathing more deeply in the lower lobes of the lungs, which if done properly will allow our stomachs to rise first and then the chest.

By breathing in more deeply and filling the lower lobes of your lungs (stomach rising) before filling the upper lopes of your lungs (chest rising) you’ll be able to allow more oxygen to move throughout your body. When practicing deep breathing, do the best you can to make your breaths even and consistent.

As a reminder, keep one hand on your stomach and one on your chest when practicing this deep breathing technique. Make sure the hand on your stomach rises first and that the hand on the chest rises 2nd. Note: the chest should rise significantly less if your pulling in air to the bottom of the lobes fully.

These deep breathing techniques are only as good a your practice of them in real live situations. When you get good at deep breathing in quiet comfortable environments, practice doing these techniques in situations that seem stressful to you. This way you can see the immediate benefits of deep breathing.

With enough time and effort you will be able to make this a “second nature” habit and your body will learn more and more how to relax so that you can stay more calm and centered throughout the day.
