Organizing your office can take a lot of time if it is not a weekly routine. Some people are able to work amidst the chaos of a messy desk, but most actually become more flustered. If you can keep your cool while working sifting through piles of unorganized papers then more power to you. For everyone else, here are a few thoughts on keeping your workspace clean.

The organizing should start with a filing cabinet. If you have a lot of papers and files that you must retain then use a stand up filing cabinet. If you only maintain a moderate amount of documents then try to find a two drawer cabinet. These will usually fit under a desk. Some desks will have matching component furniture that can be purchased in any location and connected to the desk unit at anytime.

The in and out boxes are nearly extinct. Some people hold onto them but they are really clunky and are more trouble than they are worth. If you do have a need for them then get the stacking tray kind so that it does not take up as much space.

When organizing your area try to clear it off by the end of day. When returning to work it will be nice and organized and give a positive spin to the rest of the day. A clutter free area can really promote a good attitude. It will also improve your standing with fellow employees. Co-workers tend to respect an fellow employee that can respect their work area.

If you are one of the hard working executives that are making their way to the top, then you might have a budget to work with. Try to select a desk that is part your personality and the other part is the corporate personality. Most executives will go for the authoritative look. Just remember, that if you get to pick out the furniture, it can say a lot about what type of executive you are.

A good monthly cleaning of the drawers can really help to stay organized during the week. It is also a good way to find some of those documents that may have been misplaced. Another way to keep clutter free is to use a paper shredder. It is a fairly obvious object which makes it hard to forget that it is there.

A Desk calendar is a good way to keep the days organized and protect the desktop from scratches. The calendar serves as both a reminder of days but also is a great place to jot down notes. If you get an opportunity to get to the supply store then pick up one of these calendars.
